The Heart of the Robson Valley
Dunster → McBride:
This is the Fraser River in full conversation with the valley—flowing past farms, forests, and communities rooted in its banks.
Starting at Dunster, the river has gathered confidence. It runs deeper and more defined here, carrying the character of the upper valley while settling into a steady, unhurried flow. The paddling is smooth and rhythmic, ideal for covering distance without feeling rushed, and the sense of movement—of traveling through a living landscape—is unmistakable.
As tributaries join, the water darkens and the landscape deepens. Holiday Creek offers a welcoming sandbar early in the journey, while the Raush Valley—one of the province’s last intact watersheds—marks a critical wildlife corridor linked to Wells Gray Provincial Park.
Defined by flow and perspective, this stretch lets the river do the work, leaving time to notice subtle changes in light, land, and water. The trip finishes in McBride, a welcoming rail-and-river town. Paddlers are invited to bring up to three guests each to a Salmon BBQ Dinner at Koeneman Regional Park, with presentations and a celebration of Day Two of the Fraser River Challenge Expedition.
