Classic Fraser Valley — land, water, and history meet.

Dewdney Nature Regional Park → Matsqui Trail Regional Park

This stretch of the Lower Fraser is defined by fertile soil, sweeping bends, and a river that spreads wide across the valley floor.

Launching from Dewdney Nature Regional Park, you paddle past the rich agricultural lands of Dewdney—set atop a distinctive bell-shaped alluvial fan built over centuries by Fraser River floods. The river moves steadily here, broad and powerful, bordered by fields, dikes, and pockets of riparian forest that shelter wildlife along the edges.

Early in the journey, you pass the mouth of Nicomen Slough, a quiet back channel and important habitat corridor that offers a glimpse into the Fraser’s intricate network of sidewaters. These slower waters attract waterfowl, herons, and seasonal fish movement, while the mainstem carries you west.

The scenery shifts seamlessly between open farmland and wild pockets—cottonwood stands, gravel bars, and shallow shoreline benches. The rich agricultural lands of Matsqui Prairie and Hatzic unfold along the valley bottom, framed by distant mountain ridgelines. Bald eagles are common overhead, and during salmon season the river feels charged with life.

Drift past Fraser River Heritage Park, perched above the river with sweeping views of the valley. Soon after, float beneath the steel arches of the Mission Bridge, a defining landmark that signals your approach to the journey’s end.

The trip concludes at Matsqui Trail Regional Park, where dikes and riverside trails trace the edge of the Fraser through one of the Lower Mainland’s most productive agricultural regions.

From here, you have the option of heading home or spending the afternoon exploring the area.  All paddlers are invited to join in a Salmon BBQ in the evening at Glen Valley Regional Park to hear presentations and celebrate the progress of the Fraser River Challenge!
