Tete Jaune Cache → Dunster
This is the Fraser River at the beginning of its story, still shallow and young, flowing through the vast mountain landscapes of the Rocky Mountain Trench.
Launching near Tête Jaune Cache, this gentle downstream journey flows through the scenic Robson Valley, weaving past gravel bars, cottonwood flats, and long, calm glides ideal for relaxed paddling and wildlife viewing. Early in the trip, salmon spawning grounds line the riverbanks; deer, elk, and black bear tracks are often etched into the shoreline sand.
Framed by towering peaks, this stretch is defined by flow, space, and rhythm—not speed. The current does much of the work, leaving you free to soak in the scenery, take photos, and listen to the river move.
The day ends near Dunster, a historic farming community that feels timeless and grounded. Pulling out here feels less like finishing and more like arriving—connected by water, land, and story. Paddlers are invited to bring up to three guests each to a Salmon BBQ Dinner at the Dunster Community Hall, with presentations and a celebration marking Day One of the Fraser River Challenge Expedition.
Why this stretch is special:
Pristine, accessible Fraser River headwaters
Calm, forgiving water for easy touring and nature immersion
